This play is done as a ritual on a yearly basis. This natakam (play) also known under the name of “Amuthu Padayal natakam”, is one of the surviving forms of community theatre, wherein one can be a part of the enactment and in parallel be associated with rituals in connection with the event. The skit for the play is divided into 2 parts and so performance goes on for 2 days. The script is a 18 th century text written by Sri.

The enactment is to recreate the character called Paranjothi, who was once the commander of the Pallava troops, and later came to be known as Siruthondar, one of the 63 Nayanmars of Shiva. A woman by name Sandhana Thaadi, another staunch devotee of Shiva, stays with them and willingly helps them, by performing the role of a helper, both within the household and with the other day to day rituals associated with Shiva. After their arrival, at Thiruchenkattangudi a son is born by the grace of Shiva, and he is named Seeralan. Sambandhar advices him to go to Thiruchenkattangudi (present day Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu), so that he could dedicate his life in serving Shiva and thereby find solace. He requests Paranjothi to chant the Panchakshara( 5 letters in Sanskrit- Na, Ma, Si, Va, Ya) immerse himself to serving Shiva. Sambandhar requests the ruler, to provide grants to Siruthondar, so that he could utilise them for charity and in the service of the devotees of Shiva. At this juncture, he meets, Sambandhar, one of the Nayanmars of Shiva. In spite of being victorious, Paranjothi was not happy, and was seeking inner peace. Paranjothi succeeds in his mission, and wins over Vatapi. Kadavar Kon, a Pallava ruler, sends his commander of the army troops, Paranjothi, to win over Pulakesin of Vatapi. After a few minutes of travel, we arrived at the venue by 9:30 p.m on the 3 rd of May 2019, from Chenmai. One banner after the other was giving the information on the fixtures. We came across “Pachai kali Pavazha Kali” ( a folk performance enacted on the streets), “Selli Amman”(a village deity) touring the roads. Thiru K Senthil who is adept in playing the percussion instrument(tabla and thavil), gave us information about the play, timings, venue etc.Īs we entered the heart of the city, the din of the “Parai”(a type of drum), was reverbating, announcing the arrival of a procession.

We were in touch with one Thiru.Nimmal K Senthil, an artiste, whose family has been involved with this play for generations. Our trip, was solely to see the yearly performance of the “Siruthondar Natakam”( Siruthondar being the central character in the play)/ “Amuthu Padayal natakam”( Amuthu – food, padayal – offering). are enacted in the wee hours of the night, when people throng to watch the performance, after a hard day’s work. Community theatre performances, which include natakams(Plays) like Siruthondar Natakam, Kaman Koothu, Markandeya Puranam, Prahalada Charithram, Manu Needhi Cholan Natakam etc. The consecutive months of Maasi(mid Feb – mid March) Panguni(mid March – mid April), Chithirai, Vaikasi (mid May-mid June) is usually the time, when there are a number of congregations of religous nature, in a variety of forms like dance, drama, rituals etc. (Tamil month – Chithirai (mid April – mid May), Star – Bharani, Year- Vikaari, on the day of Amavasya(new moon) and the following day) Venue: Manicka Vinayagar temple, Poondi Theru, Thanjavur(near Punnainallur Mariamman temple)ĭate: 3 rd and 4 th of May 2019.
